Fisherman’s Beanie Hat Knitting Pattern
My boyfriend has been doing pretty well out of me recently, first the baking and now I’ve gone and knitted him a hat. The hat is becoming an annual tradition, I made him one from the same pattern last year and the other day, he lost it and was having a mad panic. To avoid future crises I decided I’d make him a second one.
It only takes an hour or two to complete and isn’t too taxing so a good one to do whilst watching some TV! You’ll need 4mm needles, I used Aran but you could easily use double knitting (DK) instead.
1. Cast on 90 stitches
2. (Knit 3, Purl 3) repeat to the end of the row. Repeat for subsequent rows until piece measures 8″ (6″ if you don’t want a turn up).
3. (K7, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
4. Purl row.
5. (K6, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
6. Purl row.
7. (K5, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
8. Purl row.
9. K4, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
10. Purl row.
11. (K3, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
12. Purl row.
13. (K2, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
14. Purl row.
15. (K1, knit 2 together) repeat to the end of the row.
16. Purl row.
17. Knit 2 together to end of row
18. Purl 2 together until the end of row.
Cut off leaving a long tail of yarn and thread through the remaining five stitches with a needle. Stitch the two sides of the hat together with the yarn. Done.

I so wish I could knit looking at this!
Catherine
You defo could, it’s a really easy one! Maybe I’ll do a little tutorial on the stitches you need for it 🙂 x
Hanna
Thank you for this pattern! I’m new at knitting (just learned the techniques on christmas) and this was my first project. I love my new beanie and I’ll definitely use this pattern in the future, too!
Catherine
Thanks Hanna! I’m glad you’re enjoying learning to knit, I like little projects like this as they’re so quick. I haven’t got the patience to knit a jumper! 🙂 x

I’ve only knit one hat so far but I want to give this one a try. What weight yarn do I use? I have the 4mm needles.
Catherine
Double knit or aran are what i’ve used in the past Paul and both have turned out fine – let me know how you get on! 🙂

I just finished my hat and it looks great. I made it in teal green. I honestly don’t know how you finished it 2 hrs. It took me about 8 hrs with those 90 stitches per row! I made a few mistakes here and there but worked it out. Near the end my stitches got really tight and that slowed me down. I’ll probably make another hat though. Thanks!

Hi, Thanks for sharing. Love the hat and want to make it for my son. Could you please let me know what ply wool you used and what size needles. Thanx.
Carolyn
Oops! ???? Sorry, just retread the blog and found the info I was after. Thanx again

Hi! I love this!!! What is the finished circumference? My boyfriend has a big, bald head and I want to make sure it will fit him haha. Thank you!
Kirsty
I am a complete beginner really and have just knitted scarves, i really love this hat you have done so want to try it myself, I just wondered what do you mean by ‘K2, K3, K4, K5 is that “Knit 5” also what do you mean by knit two together?
Kind Regards,
Kirsty

How much wool did you use? I was going to use Rowan felted tweed DK and it comes in 50gs. Would two skeins be enough?
Catherine
Hi Adelle, one 100g ball was enough for me so I think 2 x 50g should be just fine x
Karen
Hi! Cool pattern! Do you knit this with straight needles?
Catherine
Thanks 😉 Yes just normal straight needles.
