Fashion Blog

Oh Hi DIY! is a place for me to share my personal style. In the below posts you'll find fashion advice, styling info and huge hauls. I love to experiment with fashion and have pretty varied tastes. I love everything from leopard print to floaty feminines to minimalist scandinavian style. My fashion rule is to try everything! You only live once and it's the best way to express whatever mood you're in at any given moment!

    Leather Necklace (Reblog)

dreamalittlebiggerblog: I have tried in the past (unsucessfully) to cut leather for jewelry making. This DIY from Minted Strawberry guesting at A Nest for All Seasons is really smart and I love the finished necklace. Jump Into Leather Jewelry with Aki. Definitely trying this one – so cute! Have loads of pleather left over from a recent project.

    Just Add Fringing! Glastonbury Shorts.

My favourite makes are the ones that I do whilst killing some time – long car or train journeys are perfect. There’s nothing else nagging at my conscience, there’s no option of doing the vacuuming or putting some washing in instead – it actually makes me feel like I’ve made use of my time to the best of my ability. The trip to Glastonbury takes four hours from Manchester and as I’ve been busy decorating my living room for the past couple of weeks I haven’t had time to make anything specific for it which I’m pretty disappointed about, so putting the trip to good use to customise my shorts…

    Spotted! Making Trousers.

Thanks to the lovely people at Abakhan this week I’ve been working on their “creative budget’ blogger challenge. The idea of this is to demonstrate that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have cool stuff! I’m into tailored trousers at the moment in a big way. They’re smart enough to wear to work but with bold printed fabric have more character than your boring boardroom pinstripe. Here I’ve teamed them with a Topshop cropped tee (I love a good literary quote) and a pair of silver ASOS slingbacks but they could just as easily worn with the hem rolled up with a pair of Air Max and a…

    Broken Promises…

So my resolution didn’t last so long – an emergency outfit for my best friend’s 30th was required and Topshop obliged. After this unfortunate tumble, I’ve climbed back onto the wagon and have got some black polka dot trousers on the sewing table.

Why Buy What You Can Make?

This week I’ve been dedicating my evenings to a new sewing project – it’s been a while since I’ve spent any time with my sewing machine but it’s been a happy reunion. I’ve made a resolution that I’m not going to buy any clothes that I couldn’t make myself (inspired by the Great British Sewing Bee) so this is project number one. I had an idea for a biker jacket using luxe cream fabric for the body with leather sleeves so cast my feelers out on the internet for a suitable pattern. (Grandma’s vintage pattern stash doesn’t cater for rock chick chic!) Never one to make it easy for myself,…

    Dip Hem Skirt (Reblog)

scissorsandthread: Sheer Gathered High-Low Skirt | Prudent Baby I know it doesn’t look it, but this is a very easy sewing project to do! The combo of sheer fabric and elasticised waist also means it’s going to be comfy and cool to wear in Summer. Oh yes, plus I love the way this is styled with the gingham shirt, so cute! Love this – probably won’t bother with the dip hem as I think perhaps that trend has had its day but sheer skirts are so feminine and summery. It looks so good with the gingham shirt too. This is definitely one for my ‘Things to Make’ list.

    Knitted Headband: Done.

I finally got round to making this after seeing the post I reblogged earlier this year. It’s quite a quick one and is good for using leftover wool. I had some fine wool in a drawer and knitted it 3 strands thick on size 7 needles (the original pattern recommends size 8 but as the wool was so thin I went a size down). I love it and am definitely going to make it in other colours. It’s quite hippy chic but is pretty practical too as it keeps the ears warm. First on the list of things to pack for Glastonbury this year! 🙂

Rose & Polka Dot Nail Art

Through the magic of nail art pens I’ve created a homage to the Cath Kidston shabby chic style on my fingernails. I used hot pink on three nails and used a Model’s Own white nail art pen to make the polka dots. For the remaining two nails I used a nude base and then drew the roses using nail art pens sourced from eBay. To create roses I drew a small hexagon with a pink pen and filled it in. Whilst still wet, use a lighter coloured pen (I used a nude colour) and swirl in a dot of colour into the pink. Repeat 2 or 3 more times over…

    Knitted Headband Tutorial (Reblog)

truebluemeandyou: DIY Three Strand Knit Cable Headband Tutorial from Concreate here. This is a clear how-to cable tutorial using 8mm or US 11 needles and she tripled the yarn (instead of one strand she used three while knitting). *For lots more knitting projects (including more headbands) go here: http://truebluemeandyou.tumblr.com/tagged/knitting
