    Just Add Fringing! Glastonbury Shorts.

My favourite makes are the ones that I do whilst killing some time – long car or train journeys are perfect. There’s nothing else nagging at my conscience, there’s no option of doing the vacuuming or putting some washing in instead – it actually makes me feel like I’ve made use of my time to the best of my ability. The trip to Glastonbury takes four hours from Manchester and as I’ve been busy decorating my living room for the past couple of weeks I haven’t had time to make anything specific for it which I’m pretty disappointed about, so putting the trip to good use to customise my shorts…

    Dip Hem Skirt (Reblog)

scissorsandthread: Sheer Gathered High-Low Skirt | Prudent Baby I know it doesn’t look it, but this is a very easy sewing project to do! The combo of sheer fabric and elasticised waist also means it’s going to be comfy and cool to wear in Summer. Oh yes, plus I love the way this is styled with the gingham shirt, so cute! Love this – probably won’t bother with the dip hem as I think perhaps that trend has had its day but sheer skirts are so feminine and summery. It looks so good with the gingham shirt too. This is definitely one for my ‘Things to Make’ list.

How to Do Leopard Nail Art

I’m not ashamed to say I love leopard print, Bet Lynch eat your heart out, but I don’t always want full on leopard all the time. This is a nice way to inject just a touch of leopard into everyday life. This nail art is super simple, all you need is a normal polish (this is Rose Pink from Rimmel) plus nail art pens in two different colours (I’ve gone for nude and black, the black is Model’s Own/Wah Nails and the nude is a generic one off eBay. The Model’s Own pen draws a finer line so is good for this.) 1. First start by painting your nails with…

    Train Driver Cake Topper

This is the cake topper I’ve made for my boyfriend’s dad’s 60th birthday party. He loves trains so the cake is going to have a railway theme (I have a model steam engine drying as I type!). This is the first model person I’ve ever made and I’m pretty proud of him, although he does only bear passing resemblance to the birthday boy! I used Sainsburys own ready-to-roll icing and Dr Oetker Coloured Regal-Ice plus additional pastes as follows: Paprika/Flesh – head and hands Liquorice – hair (tiny amount) Navy – jacket and hat (used in addition to pre-coloured blue) His trousers and tie used the pre-coloured icing. His legs…

    Crochet Doorstop Piggy Wig

Crochet Pig Latest in the series of crochet animals comes the pig, a request from my mum as a present for a pig loving friend. I used the basic body shape that I’ve used for the cat, the owl and the elephant but this time with a Fab mottled pink and white wool. The entire creation is great for beginners as the only stitches used are single and double crochets. Using the following pattern I crocheted two ears and sewed them on to each side of the head: Ch2, 2dc in second ch from hook, ch1, turn, 2dc in second ch from hook, 2dc in next st, ch 1, turn,…

    Making Sugarpaste Bows

Tonight I made an icing bow to use on the christening cake I’m making for my assessment. Although the instructions are easy to follow it’s actually quite tricky to get the bow to look perfect (particularly with acrylic nails!). 1. Roll the icing out thinly. Mine is coloured with Wilton Rose Red and has some Sugarcell mixed in so that it will dry solid. 2. Using a ribbon cutter (or a knife) cut a strip of icing at the desired with – should be just over twice as long as you’d like the bow to be. 3. Now cut the strip of ribbon in half vertically. Dab the inside of…

    The Power of the Crimp

Last night’s cake decorating lesson was all about sugarpaste. We covered boards and polystyrene dummies with a layer of sugarpaste and also learnt about embossing and crimping. The picture shows my crimping practice on a test dummy. I’m still a beginner with the crimper but here are some tips that helped me improve: 1. There’s no need to push the crimper right into the sugarpaste, a milimetre or two is enough. 2. Hold the crimper as shown in the picture. Gently squeeze the crimpers together slightly – squeezing too hard makes the indent stick out and look silly and untidy. 3. Move the cake so the section you are crimping…

Rose & Polka Dot Nail Art

Through the magic of nail art pens I’ve created a homage to the Cath Kidston shabby chic style on my fingernails. I used hot pink on three nails and used a Model’s Own white nail art pen to make the polka dots. For the remaining two nails I used a nude base and then drew the roses using nail art pens sourced from eBay. To create roses I drew a small hexagon with a pink pen and filled it in. Whilst still wet, use a lighter coloured pen (I used a nude colour) and swirl in a dot of colour into the pink. Repeat 2 or 3 more times over…

    Knitted Headband Tutorial (Reblog)

This is a clear how-to cable tutorial using 8mm or US 11 needles and she tripled the yarn (instead of one strand she used three while knitting). *For lots more knitting projects (including more headbands) go here: http://truebluemeandyou.tumblr.com/tagged/knitting
